I agree entirely with you, John. Writing is not a lonely business - you need the solitude. But you also need other like minds to discuss your writing and the differing viewpoints are stimulating. A good writers' group is invaluable and we certainly have one in WordWatchers.

Congratulations John on finishing your book and for this lovely post.

Stephen King said you should leave your manuscript for six weeks between finishing and starting an edit, because all the flaws still exist in your mind as perfections. Having wasted three months on edit one which I started immediately after finishing the book, I whole heartedly agree.

I am very much looking forward to reading your book when you have finished editing.

The good news is you now have the book to revisit every time you want to spend time with your characters. It is a lovely thing to be able to do.

Am doing a test podcast run this Wednesday night in the dining room. Going to get me a red light to hang over the TV in the living room, so the good lady knows not to shout demands for tea and cake :)

Fantastic Blog Chris!

Oxford is definitely a character (and I'm not thinking Morse here) that is vitally important in one of my favourite books - Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials".

I'm having an interesting time with Endless Possibilities as one of my major locations doesn't actually exist!

Thanks John(P) - FocusWriter is a little more complicated than that - you can change the colours of background/page/text to anything you like (I've gone for the nostalgic C64 pale blue and dark blue combo (but with black text)). You can even add an inspirational picture to the background if you so desire it. I've chosen to use the Portable Apps version, so its self contained, and technically not installed on the netbook, so I can copy the whole thing off onto a memory stick, application and novel complete.

Limited to ODT and RTF formats, but that's fine, I use LibreOffice anyway.

And very well shared Mr Hoggard. It seems you and your netbook are going to be spending a lot of time together. Am checking out FocusWriter too. I have recently been using the Chrome 'Writer' app for non-creative writing, which sounds very similar to FocusWriter - full screen, black background, green text and no distractions.

A really useful blog, John. Very helpful and, what's more, aimed specifically at me! Now I'll go away and try and implement my new found knowledge on my own website. Thank you.
